SERVICE LITERACY TEST PREPARATORY COURSE
COURSE OBJECTIVE
This task-based program is an introductory level for learners with little knowledge of English. It has been developed specifically to equip work-permit holders in the retail, hotel and food & beverage sectors with English conversation skills essential for delivering good and effective service. It prepares the students for the Service Literacy Test (SLT) administered by Singapore Workforce Development Authority (WDA) .
The course aims to develop the students’ skill and confidence to communicate in English. It consists of 30 units of one hour each. Each unit features a variety of task types and listening and speaking practices to help students move from the development of receptive skills to productive skills. The program integrates listening, speaking, reading and grammar through a variety of purposeful and meaningful learning activities.
COURSE OUTLINES
The course covers all the five categories of SLT speaking and listening standards. In addition, a wider coverage are given at more advanced level to prepare students for our Certificate in English program. The five categories are shown below.
1. Phonology/ Pronunciation 2. Vocabulary 3. Grammar
4. General Discourse (e.g.use format and structure suitable for purpose and audience, engage in simple conversations, express simple states and feelings) 5. Informational Discourse (e.g. use short emergency warnings and commands, convey simple instructions, instructions and directions).
Course Duration: 30 hours (10 sessions X 3 hours) Weekday, weekend morning, afternoon and evening classes are available.
Learning Methodology: Lectures, role plays, audio-visual exercises, and activities
Course fee: $300 for those who take all the 30 units (inclusive of course material). Students who begin at higher level will have their fee proportionally reduced.
Entry Level: A placement test will be conducted to determine the entry level for each student. For example, a student with a proficiency level of Unit 10 may proceed to start at Unit 11.
Registration
Can only be made by employers in the Retail, Hotel and F&B industries for the following groups of Work Permit Holders (WPHs):
1. Existing skilled WPHs whose Work Permits (WPs) are expiring within 2 months
2. Existing unskilled WPHs, who wish to upgrade to skilled status, and who have met all other requirements for skilled status; and
3. New WPHs who have been issued WPs and who have met all otehr requirements for skilled status.
Employers of WPHs that fall under (1) and (2) will be notified by MOM to register these WPHs for the SLT through Renewal Notices (RN) and In-Principal Approval Letters (IPA) respectively. Employers of WPHs that fall under )2) will have to apply for a levy conversion to MOM to confirm in writing if the worker had met all the other prevailing requirements, before registering the worker for the SLT.
Refund Policy
It is the responsibility of the employers to ensure that the WPHs' eligibility before registering them for the SLT. There will be NO refund if the test date registered is within the 6-month waiting period OR if there is a duplication of transactions (of same test type) on same/different dates under the same WPH.
Should the WPH taking the test choose not to proceed with the Speaking Test after failing the Listening test, the Speaking test fee will not be refunded.
All refund request must be made in writing on prescribed form. Information required to process cancellation include: contact details, official receipt reference, test details to cancel (FIN number, test type and date) and cancellation reason(s). The refund will require 3 to 4 weeks of processing time.
